Maurizio Ferrera is Professor of Political Science at the University of Milan and President of the Network for the Advancement of Social and Political Sciences (NASP). He serves in the scientific councils of the Center of European Studies at SciencesPo and the Collegio di Milano and has been Visiting Professor in several foreign universities, including the European University Institute, the University of California at Berkeley and the London School of Economics. He participated to several Advisory Committees for the Italian government and the European Commission.
His research focuses on comparative welfare states and social citizenship, Italian and South European politics, European Integration, public opinion, political theory. His work has appeared on many international journals; his last book in English is The Boundaries of Welfare (Oxford University Press, 2005, French translation in 2009). In Italian he has recently published La Società del Quinto Stato (Laterza, 2019) and La verità al Potere (Einaudi, 2019). In 2014 he was awarded an ERC Advanced Grant for a five-year project on “Reconciling Economic and Social Europe: ideas, values and consensus”. He regularly writes on the leading Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera. In 2020 he has been awarded the Mattei Dogan IPSA prize for High Achievement in Political Science.
